NBA Lockout on its way?

Published by David on 5th September - 18:15 (CET)
On December 15th this year both the players and owners are able to opt out of the CBA deal that was made after the lockout season 2011-2012.
According to several sources NBA players and agents have received emails from the union executive director that the players should ask for 18-months payment schedule instead of the usual 6-12 months payment which would allow players to continue to receive payment through the 2017-18 even if games aren't played.
The league owners have made deals with TV networks to receive rights fees throughout a work stoppage.
This might just be a precautionary act from the players representative but it’s a scary sign, I mean is life still worth living if there is no NBA?

Amongst one of many changes in the latest CBA deal from 2011, the union inserted the 18-month payment rule while accepting a decrease in basketball-related(BRI) income from 57% to 50%. To get a perspective, last year’s BRI was 4,9 billion dollars!

We will see what will happen as the season start but hopefully this will be sorted out.

Bring out your weeping blankets and lets go down memory lane and go through the previous lockouts

2011 NBA lockout

Was the fourth lockout in the history of the NBA and lasted for 161-days and reduced the season to 66 games.
Main changes were the increased age limit from 18 to 19, change in revenue and the structure of the salary cap.
All in all, a crappy situation for the fans, however there were some glimps of basketball memories from the lock out, like when Durant dropped 66 points in Rucker Park.

Easy money sniper getting it!

98-99 Lockout

Prior to this NBA was the only major league sport in the US that never had lost a game because of work stoppage. This lead to a 50-game season and without an All-star game! The main issue during this negation was focused on the minimum salary for players.

The minimum salary is based on the time of years spent in the NBA. For the 2016-2017 season a rookie player can get the minimum of 543 000$. However rookie contracts, guaranteed for first round players are more lucrative. The number one pick receives 4,9 million dollars while the 30th pick receives 973 000$. Not too shabby!

1996 Lockout

Like most things in life, this was also about the benjamins. Luckily this only lasted for a couple of hours and we were allowed to witness one of the best rookie classes of all time bring their talent to Milwakuee in Ray Allens case.
The rookie class included names like Kobe Bryant, Ray Allen and Allen Iverson.
1995 Lockout
This was the first lockout in NBA history. Luckily this only lasted until september, affecting no games.
During this season NBA introduced its first Canadian teams, Vancouver Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors and the Bulls did the historical 87 wins season!

Enjoy some highlights from Vancouver Grizzlies greatest player and first draft pick ever, Shareeef!
