Flagrant Flop Award Predictions '16-'17

Published by Axel on 3rd November - 17:00 (CET)
Don't you love how every punk with an internet connection can now pretend like their opinion is worth two shits?

That's right, folks, it's time for the first annual installment of the Flagrant Flop Award Predictions. Here you'll get the authors' takes on who's bringing home the hardware in the coming season - both for individual and team honors.

Let's get straight to it!

Axel - This year's rookie class is looking strong and there are numerous possible contenders. But I'll go with Joel Embiid, which currently seems like the obvious answer if he stays healthy. It's too bad Ben Simmons won't get a chance.

Yoshi - When Ricky Rubio is finally traded we should be seeing a whole lot more of Kris Dunn, and hopefully that stretch will suffice for him to bring home the ROY trophy. Mainly because I have him on my Fantasy League team, but also because a talented PG on the Wolves who can actually shoot the ball should be a given success considering the talent surrounding him this year.

David - I have to admit I'm not really all that hyped about this year's draft class and after the Philly curse sidelined Simmons I would also go with Joel Embiid despite the fact that he is probably going to have minute restrictions until December.

Axel - Zach Randolph. With Z-Bo heading to the bench and seemingly embracing the role I'd say he's the frontrunner. He'll have to fight off the otherwise annual receiver of the award, Jamal Crawford. I'd keep an eye on Brandon Jennings and Enes Kanter as well.

Yoshi - There's a lot of good candidates for Sixth Man this year, and besides the ones Axel mentions I wouldn't be surprised if Doug McDermott and Andre Igoudala gather some votes. In the end I'm going to go with Enes Kanter as he has already proven to be a capable scorer in limited minutes, has most opportunity to impact his team's success and because the poor guy could use some cheering up after being disowned by his family.

David - I would pick Brandon Knight if the Suns don't go with a three PG-lineup or the aussie Patty Mills.

Axel - I can't recall that any receiver of the NBA's Most Improved Player award previously was picked with the first overall pick, so I'll rule KAT out of this one and go with the Indiana Pacers' big man Myles Turner. Just like Yoshi I expect my boy Doug McDermott to have somewhat of a breakout season and gain some votes, but for the MIP award instead. Maybe D'Angelo Russell and Dennis Schröder have a chance.

Yoshi - I hate to say this as I drafted him in Fantasy League last year and was hoping he would perform already as a rookie, but Myles Turner decided to screw me over and has already started performing like a beast this year, when someone else in my league snagged him in the draft. MIP goes to Myley Tyrus!

David - This is a difficult one as it feels like a blooming out year for a lot of players, especially if we are comparing most improved contracts! I would go with Hassan Whiteside as the former D-league player signed a four-year $98 million contract and will hopefully make his money's worth!

Axel - Rudy Gobert, DeAndre Jordan and Hassan Whiteside are possible contenders, but I'd put my money on Kawhi Leonard again. If he receives the award he'll become the second player ever to do so three years in a row. Dwight Howard also did so in an ancient time when we still thought he was good.

Yoshi - While there may be some voter fatigue, it's hard to see anyone prying this award away from Kawhi Leonard. The Spurs figure to be the best defensive time yet again and Kawhi figures to keep being Kawhi.

David - Yeah I would also put Axel's money on this and take the profit when he wins! Kawhi Leonard all the way.

Axel - This one is tough. I previously shared my views on the subject a few months ago. While I back then went with Kawhi Leonard I might have changed my mind. Why? Because of my previous prediction that Leonard will be this years DPOY. Michael Jordan, David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett are the only players in history to receive both awards in their career. Jordan and Olajuwon are the only ones to bring home both awards the very same season. Even though Leonard is a fantastic player I just don't see that happening. So who are the other real contenders? I'd say LeBron, Westbrook or Harden, and my final vote will land on Rusell Westbrook as OKC could surprise some of us and do better than expected.

Yoshi - I'll have to double down on Internal Smiley here and go with Kawhi Leonard as both DPOY and MVP. The impact he has on both sides of the floor for a team that looks to be a sure lock for one of the top two spots in the West just cannot be ignored. He is joining Jordan and Olajuwon this year, and he was drafted only in 2011, people!

David - Russell Westbrook. If OKC manages to get a top five spot in the Western Conference, and his teammates will probably step up - otherwise there will be more angry looks from Westbrook.

Axel - Mike D’Antoni finally coaches a good roster again. No matter their defense this team will score a lot. Other good alternatives should be Brad Stevens or defensive expert Tom Thibodeau, who previously won the award in 2011 with the Chicago Bulls.

Yoshi - I love how Axel manages to squeeze in the Bulls anywhere he goes! My money for Coach Of the Year this season goes to David Joerger of the Sacramento Kings. Hahaha, just kidding, no one can coach that garbage team! I'm going with Gregg Popovich getting his fourth trophy as I think the Spurs are going to be so good they make people forget that there is a team in the Bay Area this year.

David - I don't see the Houston Rockets making enough progress to give D'Antoni the award, but just a couple of games into the season I wouldn't be surprised if the Bulls manage to land a top three seed in the East giving Fred Hoiberg the award. (I'm not saying this to keep boss man Axel happy, I prefer being a hater).

Axel - I don't expect the Warriors to be the same kind of regular season juggernaut that we saw during the previous season. Their defense might be slightly worse, but the offense? Controlling Harrison Barnes in a 7-game series was one thing, KD is a different animal. Warriors in seven, sorry Bron-Bron.

Yoshi - It's hard to see anything but a repeat of the previous two Finals matchups this year, but I'm staying true to my earlier predictions and foresee a San Antonio Spurs vs Cleveland Cavaliers Finals matchup, with Lebron finally getting some vengence against Pop and the Cavs coming out on top in seven games.

David - Warriors in seven games versus the Cavs. KD will have the luxury to focus on the offense and leave the difficult job of guarding the freight train LBJ to Igoudala.
