Oh no, those two words again

Published by Yoshi on 1st November - 17:46 (CET)
Sometimes a couple of words bear an impact far beyond their literal meaning. In sports, a couple of words that don't even have to be unique in any way can bring out a multitude of memories and feelings or perfectly encapsule a moment or even a player's whole career. Take a note of what you feel when just reading these words for instance, before clicking the links:

The Malice

Let's go home

The Shot

Most of you immediately knew exactly what those links led to and could remember vividly those defining moments in the lives of the athletes involved, and in extension the impact on millions of fans following these athletes.

While browsing news on the NBA today, I was saddened to yet again stumple upon a couple of words that are increasingly defining for the career of young Ricky Rubio; out indefinitely. This time it is a sprained elbow, and we are yet to find out how much time he will miss.

Over the course of his first five seasons Rubio has battled a variety of injuries and played on average only 56 games per year. Though he is still relatively young at 26 years, the injuries are stacking up and the NBA schedule is not exactly kind on people's bodies over time. Being prone to injuries is different than having one injury that you need to recover from, and unfortunately Ricky's resume suggests he falls into category prone.

Now I don't mean to sound like a hipster, but I loved Rubio way before it was cool. He got my full attention when he dropped the most ridiculous stat lines I've ever seen in the U16 European Championship for Spain in 2006:
  • 19 points, 10 rebounds, 13 assists and 11 steals in 33 minutes against Croatia in the semi-finals, and
  • 51 points, 24 rebounds, 12 assists and 7 steals in 49 minutes against Russia in the finals
Sheeeeeeesh! As a huge fan of Steve Nash you can imagine how my spider senses were tingling uncontrollably when seeing these lines right as Nash had wrapped up his second straight MVP season. Many people probably felt the same way and started longing for the day that Rubio would come to the NBA and have the magician PG torch passed to him by the Great Canadian.

Rubio was drafted in 2009, but didn't join the league until 2011 as fanboys worldwide rejoiced, including your's truly. But alas, the past five years have not given us what we were longing for. When healthy, Rubio has more than lived up to his dazzling passing reputation, but due to his career .368 FG% defenders haven't been treating him as Nashty, but rather as someone who smells nashty. And as injury after injury plagues the young Timberwolf, he might never get the chance to develop into the player we were hoping he would become.

Rubio, mi amor, te quiero, please get well soon!
