2016-17 might offer a few broken records

Published by Axel on 11th December - 03:25 (CET)
It's easy to get a habit of feeling that every season is special in the league "where amazing happens". Somehow though, the 2016-17 season really seems to be kind of special.

We've seen DeMar DeRozan turn into a deadly scorer, LeBron James transform into a true playmaker, Anthony Davis averaging more than 30 points per game and Jimmy Butler emerge as a true star . We've seen Kevin Love play his best basketball in years and Russell Westbrook completely destroy the box scores. Young guys like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Karl-Anthony Towns and Kristaps Porziņģis have shown us that the league is in good hands and older veteran players like Dwight Howard and Dwyane Wade have to the pleasure of many returned home.

There are a few other notable things about this season. We might even witness a few broken records.
  • This season's league average of 9.33 three pointers made per game is easily on pace of becoming the all time record. Perhaps not that surprisingly in this era but it's still a heavy increase from 6.5 three pointers per game in 2010-11.
  • The 3-Point field goal percentages of .352 in 2016-17 is far from the highest though. In fact it only ranks 17th on the list since the NBA started to record this stat in 1979. Which of course means that this season's 26.5 attempted threes per game ranks 1st with ease. In the last 10 years the league average has increased by about 10 attempts per game.
  • As the game revolves more around the three ball the number of free throws taken each game have decreased. This season's 23.3 free throw attempts per game is the 4th lowest in history. Ironically the league average of .766 in free throw percentage is the 4th highest history.
  • The heavy focus on outside shots have also decreased the number offensive rebounds a lot. The 2016-17 league average of 10.3 offensive rebounds per game is the lowest ever since the NBA divided rebounds into two separate categories in 1973.
  • In opposite the number of defensive rebounds have increased by the years. This season's 33.8 defensive rebounds per game is the highest since the NBA started recording this stat.
  • Without speculating about the reasons as for why, players/teams in general seem to take care of the ball better than ever. The 2016-17 league average of 12.9 turnovers per 100 plays is the lowest in NBA history.
  • As you probably could guess by the reduced number of free throws taken, the amount of personal fouls have also decreased in recent years. 20.3 personal fouls per game is the 4th lowest in history.
  • The league is currently swarming with great shooters and this season's league average of .503 in effective field goal percentage is the highest ever.
