Here we go again

A while ago I asked what Carmelo Anthony's problem is, anyway, trying to figure out why things just haven't worked out for him outside of international basketball (which of course doesn't count if you play for Team USA) and making the case that he simply isn't one of the greats for various reasons. I am far from original in questioning the value of Mr Anthony as the veteran has somewhat fallen from grace in the public eye, showcased best by his sixth place among Eastern frontcourt players in fan votes gathered for the 2017 NBA All Star Game. Unless Melo gets some of Zaza's hackers to help him out or the coaches bring him along to the bench, this will be just the second time since 2007 that the Syracuse alumnus fails to be named an All Star.

But it seems that someone much more important than the average fan has gotten tired of asking what Melo's problem is. If the rumors are true, the Zen Master himself and president of the New York Knickerbockers, Phil Jackson, has grown weary of the forward's ways which are seen as preventing the team from reaching higher heights now that the Knicks are facing a fourth straight year outside of the Playoff picture. There's questioning of Melo's conditioning, willingness to adjust to the offensive plan and interest in playing defense. Carmelo has noted the criticism and stated in a press conference that "If they feel like my time in NY is over, I guess that's a conversation we should have."

Now, moving Anthony is not the easiest thing to do as he has a no-trade clause in his jumbo-sized contract ($25M this year, $26M in '17-'18, player option for $28M in '18-'19) which can't be waived without his consent, and reportedly he is only willing to waive that clause for a trade to the Cavaliers or the Clippers. Those two teams are likely not in a hurry to pull off a move of that magnitude as they are both prominent candidates for the championship this season and will probably not tinker with team chemistry to the extent that a trade for Carmelo 'Black hole' Anthony would require.

All this adds up to quite a buildup for the next act in the drama that is Melo's career. Despite enjoying some success in Denver with a front office that made an effort to build around him, he publicly forced his way out of Colorado to his chosen location of New York in 2011, and now seems to be as demanding in his potential departure from the Big Apple. Of course, the no-trade clause - approved by Phil Jackson - makes it his prerogative to set demands, but going through yet another messy, public break-up can hardly be beneficial for him, New York or the team he ends up going to.

We will have to wait and see where the Melodrama takes us in 2017, but make sure you prepare some popcorn because this might get juicy!
