Who is this Yogi guy??

Published by Yoshi on 6th February - 07:30 (CET)
If you haven't been following the Dallas Mavericks lately - and let's be honest, who has? - you might have missed this out-of-the-blue-sensation named Yogi Ferrell. I did a Google image search and above is literally what came up as the top results, so yeah, this guy is not exactly a household name in the NBA - but maybe he should be.

With the Mavs stretched on the PG position after Deron Williams, JJ Barea and Pierre Jackson all sustained injuries, Ferrell was brought in on a 10-day contract from the D-League. Earlier in the '16-'17 season he had played ten games for the Brooklyn Nets and averaged 5.4 points and nothing else worth mentioning over 15.1 minutes per game before being dropped on December 8th. Well, he seems to have had something to prove after that first stint in the big league, because the dude came out blazing with the Mavs!

In his first game against the San Antonio Spurs the rookie delivered nine points and seven assists along with a couple of rebounds and two steals. All right, not bad for a newbie against the All-Mighty Spurs - and this translated into a Dallas win nonetheless. Second game Yogi went off for 19 points on 7-15 shooting, including 3-6 from deep, with five rebounds, three assists and four steals! Against the Champion Cavaliers! And this too was a win for Dallas! In game three he cooled off a bit, delivering 11 points on 3-13 shooting in another W against the 76ers, so maybe that hot start was a fluke NO IT WAS NO FLUKE BECAUSE THE NEXT GAME YOGI WENT ABSOLUTELY BONKERS!!! Sorry about that, I tried to contain myself, but in his fourth game with the Mavs Yogi Ferrell dropped an astonishing 32 points on 11-17 shooting, including 9-11, yes nine for eleven three-pointers on the Portland Trailblazers with a couple of rebounds and five assists for good measure - this too a win for Dallas, their fourth straight with Yogi running the show.

While it may be too soon to shout Yogisanity, those nine threes place him tied at fifth place all time for most in a game which is pretty damn impressive in a fourth game as an NBA starter. The Dallas Mavericks are impressed as well, because they just gave Yogi bear some sweet, sweet honey as they signed him to a two year minimum contract worth just north of $1.1 million. Talk about making the most of a 10-day contract!

With the cash in the bank and his future sealed for now, let's hope Yogi keeps this quality of play up and gives poor Dirk Nowitzki a reason to go to work again!
